Education is a key tenet of the Coal River Group. We believe that by educating people about the rivers, we create better stewards of the watershed and instill pride in our local community.
The Coal River Group hosts a variety of education programs. We routinely hold field trips and water festivals, following the Project WET curriculum, for school and youth groups.
In the Fall of 2012, the CRG partnered with Madison Middle School to enter the Samsung "Solve for Tomorrow" Contest. Our project to engage 8th graders in the WVDEP's Little Coal River restoration made it to the grand finals, winning $40,000 in technology for the school! As a result, we planned a series of field trips and in-school presentations by experts from the WVDEP, WV Conservation Agency, Stantec Engineering, Appalachian Stream Restoration, Marshall University and WVU.
