Historic Preservation

The Coal Rivers are rich in history, with human settlement dating back to Native American tribes. Our rivers are listed on the National Register of Historic Places for the eight locks and dams built in the 1850's and the series of log booms constructed in the 1890's.

Preserving our local history is paramount at the Coal River Group. Given that so many events and legends on the rivers went unrecorded, the CRG is dedicated to documenting and preserving historical photographs and legacies from days gone by. The Group works with the St. Albans Historical Society to collect historic data. At the CRG Science & Education Center, visitors learn all about the history of the watershed and can view our collection of historic artifacts and photos.

Did you know? George Washington was the first person to survey the land that is now St. Albans.
