The West Virginia Watershed Network has announced that the 14th annual statewide Watershed Celebration Day will be held at the Coal River Group’s Science & Education Center in Tornado, WV (near St. Albans). The event will be held on September 7 and 8, 2012.
“Bringing a statewide event to the region has been a goal of ours since we finished the River Center,” reports Bill Currey, chairman of the CRG. “We expect over 150 attendees along with a number of state officials and, of course, many of our members.”
The West Virginia Watershed Network is comprised of state and federal agencies, non-profit organizations, and watershed associations. The Coal River Group won the Watershed of the Year award in 2009 and again in 2011, along with the Deckers Creek watershed.
As hosts, the CRG will provide support and help with logistics for the two-day event. Plans include a conference and training day followed by an awards ceremony to recognize the tireless efforts of the volunteers in the watershed movement.
The CRG will host two paddle trips on the Coal River Walhonde Water Trail for interested participants of all skill levels. In addition, activities will include a nature hike at the CRG Barnette Conservation Preserve in St. Albans and opportunities to fish. Friday night the CRG will host a square dance with a live local band, so bring your dancing shoes!
The CRG is seeking sponsors to help provide scholarships for volunteers from watershed groups around the state to attend the event. Additional contributions are being solicited to help with the conference awards, set up, and logistical needs.
Organizations and business groups that wish to contribute should contact CRG President Kris Radford for more details: 304-549-1348.
